I agree that most people are using music right now as a way of participating in something that feels bigger— aligning themselves with one another by using a constantly-shifting cloud of band names. I think it’s how a lot of people mate now— I have no doubt this is more integral to the present internet & underground music phenomenon than anyone has acknowledged. Around the world people are seeking out potential hookups via small lists of keywords that represent particular certain sonic flavors… the bands give them a neutral place to go together (a show) and a neutral thing to talk about (that tune), it’s a kind of a kit for kissing and/or sex.
